While You Were Out: Handling Student Absences

I have been THE. WORST. at handling student absences and getting make up work together.

Students would come in and be like, "I was out yesterday. Do we have any make up work?" And I would think to myself, "they were out??? I had no idea..." {you know you've had those moments too!}

I had to come up with something simple since I have 1,001 tasks to accomplish in a 60 minute block.

This is how I do it...

1. Give the students assigned seats

2. As the students are doing their bell ringer, if I notice a seat is empty, I head over to this fancy bulletin board (I mean, it took me like 5 minutes to put it up)

3. Write the student's name on the calendar.
4. At the end of the day, I fill out the While You Were Out paper of what we did in class.

5. Skip to the copier and make as many copies as I need.

6. Write the student's name on it, attach needed copies, and put it in their class folder.
7. It is the student's responsibility to pick up the paper and turn in the work by the assigned date.

The hardest part is walking the 20 feet to the copy room and fighting with the paper jams that are ALWAYS just left waiting....
